DevotionIn the context of true religion, "devotion" is a calm and strong attitude of the will,
the fruit of reflective decision, by which one puts oneself into a disposition of being always ready for the service of God. Devotion then is a disposition of the spirit and the mind, which permeating ones life, gives form and direction to subsequent acts in which "service of God" is made actual |

DevotionChristian devotion involves a self abandonment, an abandonment of self- centeredness to a devotion to God, a devotion to His will and purpose, a devotion to His love, His attitudes and His compassionate action in each situation of our own everyday experience. Devotion is a moment by moment dedication to adopting Christ's attitudes and discerning his eternal purpose in the present moment.
DEVOTION is both our positive decision to act in harmony with God's will and our grace filled action to comply with and come alive in the fulfilling of God,s purpose where we are. |

Popular devotionLiturgical and personal prayer do not completely exhaust the possibilities of religious life. There is a third form which is called popular devotion.
The atmosphere of Popular devotion is one of warmth and immediacy. the form of songs used can be popular and express with a greater directness, the religious impulses of the people.Popular devotion can take place in open air on united walks of witness at public celebrations, at demonstrations ,on public transport. Family Rosary said around the coffin on the evening before a funeral,,,,,, "Praying over" on days of renewal,,,,,,,, Lighting candles in a public place when people of a community come together,,,,,, are but a sample of popular devotion which bring people together in prayer. DIALOGUE PRAYER This form of prayer speaks to God and allows God to speak to us. It enables us to be informed of God's designs, desires and deeds, and enables God to offer us direction in our lives The scriptures abound with detailed illustrations of men and women who had conversations with God Through our Lord Jesus we find forgiveness of sins and fellowship with the Father. We have fellowship and communion with God in Prayer. DIRECTED PRAYER A week or perhaps three weeks in which you let a PRAYER GUIDE direct or suggest some avenues of prayer which you can explore. A period of directed prayer might introduce new prayer experiences, different methods and techniques of prayer and attitudes in prayer. Based on the spiritual exercises of St Ignatious of LOYOLA In Ignatian or Jesuit directed prayer, the directed person shares verbally his experience of prayer with his prayer guide, who does not council or teach the directed person, The prayer guide suggests a selection or choice of scripture readings to pray one way or another before their next meeting The introduction to Ignatian or Imaginative contemplation is important. The practice of a form of the examen or review of the dayis also equally necessary for spiritual progress. DISCERNMENT Jules J. Toner, SJ A Commentary on SAINT IGNATIUS' RULES for the DISCERNMENT of SPIRITS Jules J Toner, SJ DISCERNING GOD'S WILL DISCERNMENT Discernment is a subject for prayer in so far as we are to ask for it. We are to ask for discernment so that in prayer we might discern spirits.... so that we might discern the will of God,..... so that we might discern what is of God and realise what is contrary.... so that we might discern between good and evil, in order that we may approve what is excellent and choose what is best. so that our lives will be occupied in fulfilling the divine purpose in all holiness. DISCERNMENT is done in prayer. DISCERNMENT is an activity of prayer in order to achieve the spiritual growth which will enable us to live the life in the Spirit to which we aspire. DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS is also a deep knowledge of God's action in the hearts of men, it is a gift of the Spirit as well as the fruit of charity THE DIVINE OFFICE. The Liturgy of the hours, (the renewed Divine Office) was published in Latin in 1971. This was produced in the English language in 1974 with the title THE DIVINE OFFICE In order that Christians might take part in common prayer, sung and spoken, sanctifying the whole day, The liturgy of the hours evolved over many centuries Especially dear to all who wish to be united in spirit with the Church at prayer and who desire, even though they belong to no group or community, to praise and pray with disciplined regularity. The Divine Office is the complete edition of the Liturgy of the Hours, "Daily Prayer" contains all the day Hours "Morning and Evening Prayer contains Morning Prayer (Lauds) Evening Prayer (Vespers) with Night Prayer (Compline) The sung celebration of the Divine Office is the form which best accords with the nature of the prayer. Singing the Divine Office expresses its solemnity in a fuller way and expresses a deeper union of hearts in performing the praises of God The Divine Office, in keeping with ancient Christian tradition, is so devised that the whole course of the day and night is made holy by the praise of God. All who take part in the divine office share in the great honour of the Bride of Christ standing before God's throne in the name of the Church, in the power of the Spirit, and in the name of Jesus. THE DIVINE OFFICE The background to the liturgical offices were set down not only by St John Cassian 360-433, but also by St Cyprian of Carthage. For upon the disciples at the third hour ( Terce ) the Holy spirit descended...... moreover at the sixth (Sext ) hour,Peter going up to the housetop was instructed as well by the sign as by the word of God.... and from the sixth hour until the ninth ( Nones ), the Lord being crucified washed away our sins by his blood,,, for we must also pray in the morning ( Prime ) also at the sunsetting (Vespers) and the decline of the day ( Compline ) we must pray again. |
