The BENEDICTINE method of prayerThis is a method of prayer that has come to be known as the Benedictine Method
because it was popularised by St Benedict; it has been in use in the Church for centuries. There are three stages in this method of prayer called Lectio, Meditato, and Oratio. Lectio is the lectio divina, the reading. You begin by reading a passage from Scripture or a trusted spiritual book. You keep on reading until you come to a sentence or phrase that appeals to you. This is the place to stop your reading. to end the Lectio and move on to Meditato, the meditation. The meditation is done by repetition of these words either vocally or mentally without reflection or discursive thought. Recite them interiorly and relish them without stopping to make any deep reflection upon them.. As you go along you will tend to emphasize some words over others and your sentence will grow shorter. Keep on repeating those words as long as the repetition brings you savour and relish,Then stop and enter the third phrase, the oratio,, the phase of prayer. As you keep repeating those words ,a time comes when you want to stop and dwell on them silently or say something to the lord. This is Oratio. You may not want to speak to the Lord but just be silent in His presence, letting yourself rest lovingly in the presence of the Lord who has said these words. There are hundreds of sentences in the Psalms where we will want to rest and nourish ourselves. from Anthony de Mello, S.J. |
