And those who know your name
put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you. PSALM 9:10 The New Oxford Annotated Bible, New Revised Standard Version. |
HesychiaHesychia: stillness, quiet, tranquillity. This is the central consideration in the prayer of the "desert fathers". On the external level it signifies an individual living as a solitary;
on a deeper level it is not merely separation from noise and speaking with other people, but the possession of interior quiet and peace. thus it is possible to use the term of many who do not actually live the hermit life. It means more specifically guarding the mind, constant remembrance of God and the possession of inner prayer. Hesychasm is the general term and hesychast is the noun used to describe the person seeking to follow this way of prayer. |

Prayer before Iconsfrom Saint John of Kronstadt " ON PRAYER"
If I pray to God with a hearty, lively, and perfect faith, then I am not only near Him, as a son living in the same house as his father, but I am also near to all the heavenly powers, to all the saints reigning in heaven: and they are no farther away from me than the icons before which I pray Therefore it is an excellent custom to have icons in our houses,. Their nearness to our bodily sight betokens their greater nearness to our spiritual sight, armed with undoubting faith. An icon is not a likeness, it is a sign and a focus of real presence. The Eastern Christian is helped by use of the Icon to " actively participate in the liturgy of heaven. |
